For its second in-row-editions, EDUC was able to introduce high-school students from the region Ile-De-France to international research through a bilingual escape game.
Regional high-school students discover EDUC
General presentation
Every year, the Research Platform in Education, Psychology, and Neuroscience (EPN-R federation) hosts a group of high school students as part of their mandatory internship to explore the professional world.
During this program, students:
- meet tenured and trainee faculty members who explain their research to them
- observe experimental demonstrations and visit research facilities
- participate in lab meetings and lectures in the auditorium
As part of this program, the European University Alliance EDUC organized a bilingual (French-English) escape game recounting the story of a missing researcher, with the goal of helping students discover, in a fun way, the key methodological steps that scientists follow when seeking to study and make new discoveries, while also raising their awareness of international perspectives through a bilingual narrative.
Objectives
This project, born out of a collaboration between teams from the research department DRED, the international departement DRIM, and the EDUC Alliance, aims to:
- facilitate dialogue between science, research, and society
- bridge gaps between academic worlds
- strengthen collaborations between educational institutions
Outline
During this escape game, set in the heart of the Foreign Languages and Cultures library in Nanterre, the high-schoolers had to use logic and, above all, work as a team to complete their missions and escape the game area before the countdown ended.
Players take on the roles of a group of survivors who have taken refuge in the library after the outside air became contaminated. There, they discover the work of a scientist who seemed to be on the verge of finding a cure. Players must understand her methodology and solve numerous puzzles to recover her work. But they have only one hour before rescue teams arrive to evacuate the city.
To formulate hypotheses and follow leads, they had to assemble puzzles, conduct experiments, follow protocols, or decipher codes.
Both groups managed to complete the game in less than an hour.
Conclusion
The event was a resounding success, as it allowed participants to get to know each other better, learn to collaborate, and discover the research environment within a university.
We would like to thank the students and everyone who helped make this event a success.
